‘Launch from Greater Bay Area - Nanhai I Shipwreck and the Maritime Silk Road’ opens in Hong Kong

On 15th August, by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the Hong Kong SAR Government Development Bureau, the Macao SAR Government Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture jointly planned and hosted, China Art Exhibitions China and the Hong Kong SAR Development Bureau, Antiquities and Monuments Office, the King of the South Vietnamese Museum (Western Han Dynasty, South Vietnam History Research Centre), Guangdong Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology hosted the ‘Launch from Greater Bay Area --Nanhai I Shipwreck ‘and the Maritime Silk Road’ exhibition, the official opening of the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre. Art Exhibitions China Deputy Director Zhou Yu, Secretary for Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government Ning Hanhao, Deputy Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government Zheng Jiming and other guests attended the opening ceremony.

Zhou Yu said in his speech, the Art Exhibitions China and Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao jointly launched the ‘Launch from Greater Bay Area - “Nanhai I Shipwreck” and the Maritime Silk Road’ exhibition, is a Hong Kong cultural relics Exploratorium as the main exchange position to launch another new achievement, but also Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area cultural heritage exchanges and cooperation in another new practice, and effectively promote the ‘State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government Development Bureau on deepening cultural heritage exchanges and cooperation in the field of the Framework Agreement’ related to the implementation of the work on the ground. As a next step, Art Exhibitions China will, under the leadership and support of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, fully implement the spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the Twentieth Central Committee of the CPC, inherit and carry forward the Silk Road Spirit of ‘peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and mutual appreciation, mutual benefit and win-win situation’, and continue to strengthen the exchanges and cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao cultural heritage circles, so as to protect and make use of the rich cultural heritage resources of the motherland and pass on the rich heritage resources of the motherland, and to promote the development of the cultural heritage of Hong Kong. Ning Hanhao said that this exhibition brings together exhibits related to the Maritime Silk Road from the Nanhai I Shipwreck, archaeological sites in Guangdong, Macao and Hong Kong, allowing us to study and display the history of maritime trade, trade and cultural exchanges with overseas countries from a new perspective, and allowing us to feel the common origin and cultural interconnections among the people of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. cultural interconnections. The exhibition gathers 255 pieces (groups) of cultural relics from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macao, Foshan, Huizhou, Changsha and other places, and is divided into the following categories: ‘’Nanhai I Shipwreck‘ and “Guangdong Jar”’, ‘’Guangdong Jar‘’, ‘’Guangdong Jar‘’ and ‘Guangdong Jar’. ’, ‘’Nanhai I Shipwreck‘ Route Re-examination’ and ‘’Guangdong Jar' and the Maritime Silk Road ‘The three parts of the exhibition aim to take the latest archaeological research results of Nanhai I Shipwreck, the benchmark of domestic underwater archaeology, as a basis, and through the display of important archaeological discoveries of kiln sites, ports, shipwrecks and other important archaeological discoveries related to the Maritime Silk Road, vividly display the story of the Maritime Silk Road of the Greater Bay Area, and fully present the pioneering efforts of the people of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, Inclusive, open exchange of cultural genes, better play the unique role of heritage resources in enhancing national identity, sense of belonging and national pride, to promote cultural exchanges in the Greater Bay Area, enhance cultural self-confidence, and carry forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture has a positive significance.

The exhibition will be on display until 12 February 2025 at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre. During the exhibition period, the organisers will also organise talks, study tours and other promotional and educational activities for the public, especially the youth.
